"Enjoy the Shuswap River Region "
Kingfisher Interpretive Centre near Mabel Lake Since 1981 the Kingfisher Interpretive Centre salmonid hatchery, 25 km east of Enderby, has been integral to the restoration of a chinook salmon sport fishery on the Shuswap River and Mabel Lake. KIC Society of volunteers received a BC Government Award for its oustanding work to conserve and develop the recreational fishery and supporting habitat on the Shuswap River. Visitors can enjoy the 10-hectare site any time year round. There is a covered shelter and marked trail in the surrounding woods and river shoreline. Events at the centre include the Thanksgiving Day weekend chinook Egg-Take, the fry release on June 21 and an annual August Salmon barbeque dinner. The 2006 Chinook Egg-Take yeild was 85,000 eggs from 28 individual parent fish all weighing over 20 pounds. Thousands of red Sockey Salmon were in the river spawning during the Chinook run as well. This was an exciting natural event to witness. The close-up photo is of a Sockeye Salmon which average about 5 pounds.
